Reflections on a Lifetime in Ceremony & Passing On The Light
There is a quiet, sacred space that exists just before a ceremony begins. Whether it is the hushed anticipation in a room full of wedding guests, the heavy stillness before a funeral, or the grounded warmth of a family gathered for a baby naming, that pause belongs to the celebrant. For me, it is a defining moment when we prepare to hold space for the fullness of human emotion.
Looking back over more than 31 years of lived celebrancy, I am often struck by the immense privilege of this work. To step into people’s lives at their most vulnerable, joyful, and transformative thresholds is not just a career. It’s a calling. Officiating across all rites of passage has taught me that ceremony is not about reading words from a page. It is about alchemy.
Crafting the Ceremony
When I first started, I quickly learned that a truly great ceremony requires a deep understanding not just of narrative and ritual, but of grounded presence. Anyone can write a script, but a Heart-led Celebrant creates the alchemy of a threshold.
Honouring the Love Stories
In weddings, our purpose is to capture the unique essence of a couple’s love, transforming their shared history into a living narrative that binds them together as they offer their promises and pledges.
Holding Space for Grief
In bereavement, the responsibility shifts to biographical storytelling. We become the keepers of a legacy, crafting a soft place for families to land while navigating their deepest losses.
Celebrating New Beginnings
Whether welcoming a child or marking a transgender person’s new identity, naming ceremonies formally honour the evolution of who we are.
Every threshold—including the less traditional ones like divorce healing, blessingways, and sagesse—demands our complete presence, our authentic voice, and our undivided empathy.
Moving Words “Off the Page”
A ceremony is a sensory, emotional experience, and one that requires vocal excellence, an awareness and a command of body language, and the ability to control one’s own nerves so we can be the anchor for everyone else in the room.
When we speak from the heart space, treating the words as if they are fresh thoughts occurring to us in the moment, a chemical reaction happens. The words come alive. They add colour, strength, and majesty, ensuring that the moments we create remain fixed in people’s minds and hearts forever.
Passing on the Light
The beauty of this path is that it constantly calls for personal growth. This call demands integrity, self-awareness, and a mind, body, and soul approach to serving our communities. After a lifetime of stepping up to the threshold, my greatest joy is now sharing these professional secrets and lived experiences with the next generation of Heart-led Celebrants. Celebrancy is an art form, and when approached with deep generosity, rigorous mastery, and an open heart, it has the power to change lives, not just for the clients we serve, but for ourselves.
