Choosing where to train as a celebrant is an incredibly exciting milestone. This is the first step towards a deeply fulfilling career. Naturally, you want to ensure your investment leads to the best start possible.
When researching courses, it’s easy to get swept up in the polished world of corporate advertising. You’ll see promises of large student cohorts, flashy portals, and a “wide variety of tutors”. On paper, a big roster of names sounds impressive! But in the world of celebrancy, there is a hidden truth that many newcomers simply do not know to look for. The truth is this: people do not know what they do not know until they are standing in front of a grieving family or a nervous couple.
When it comes to learning this sacred craft, we need to ask ourselves a vital question: Do a wide variety of voices outweigh the profound depth of lived experience?

In large corporate training schools, a long list of tutors often masks a different reality. Many of these instructors come from corporate or marketing backgrounds. They are undeniably experts at selling training courses and managing large classrooms, but they often have very little lived, day-to-day experience as working celebrants. This means it requires safe spaces to develop your practice, constructive, personalised feedback and tutors who actually have the time to listen to you. Without that focused depth, it is incredibly easy to graduate from many places with a certificate (based on attendance and not aptitude), only to realise you feel entirely unprepared for the actual reality of the job. We’ve retrained many people who are graduates of the large training schools because they were ill prepared for the role of celebrancy.

Ask them about the types of funerals they have conducted this year, or what sort of weddings they have beautifully orchestrated. In celebrancy, depth will always trump a crowd.
