Creating A Beautiful Body of Work

“What do you do?”

The easy answer is “I’m a celebrant!”

Now, of course, it might need further explanation for those who think it means vicar, registrar, humanist or celibate! 😉

What is a celebrant, though? Yes, we can say “I create, write and officiate ceremonies that are meaningful to my clients and their beliefs”; and that is what I’ve said for three decades. While that’s true, it is more than that.

There’s a box I keep in my writing room which houses copies of Order of Service sheets for many of the funerals I’ve created. I’ve folder upon folder of beautiful photos, thank you cards, kind emails, as well as gorgeous ‘thank you’ gifts for other types of ceremonies. Every bouquet of flowers and all the boxes of chocolate have been gratefully received. “I create, write and officiate ceremonies” doesn’t fully represent what I do. How could it? How does it define the chocolate, flowers, other glorious gifts, cards, gift vouchers and more that go beyond the words ‘thank you’? There are worlds within worlds within worlds in my celebrant life. So, a better answer to the question of “what do you do?” is:

As a Heart-led Celebrant, I create a beautiful body of work.

This is my gift, and this is my legacy.

Within that world, is the gift of reciprocity.

I give and I receive.

I receive and I give.

Each and every meeting with clients, crafting and creating, writing, rehearsing scripts for hours and hours on end, and officiating ceremonies, all feeds into something greater; something which is the collective space and energy of ‘this is my gift’ to the world. When we see our Heart-led business and the creations which emanate as a ‘beautiful body of work’, something deep shifts within. By the nature of what we do, every ceremony is bespoke. When no two ceremonies are the same, and we understand the value of a vocation with no ‘short cuts’, we inevitably build a business where we express ourselves with integrity and heart. This is our strength. We see our creative cycles as our strength. Creativity is our superpower and a lifelong renewable resource. Our Heart-led Celebrancy is inspired by purpose and presence. On a soul level, we recognise that this isn’t a career but a calling. This creative sovereignty ensures that our daily practice is a choice. Our work reflects our true, inner self.

Our business is an extension of our heart, and so it is only natural to create a beautiful body of work. This is who we are. No matter who our clients are, or how challenging a circumstance, or difficult an audience, or dire a work space, we hold the frequency and intention of ‘creating beauty’. We learn to become anchored in our strength and energy. We feed into our ‘body of work’ in countless ways. By recognising that we bring a one-of-a-kind energy to our Heart-led practice, we see our work as sacred. And from here, we nurture, nourish and acknowledge just what it is we bring to this world.

May your daily affirmation be:

I am creating

a beautiful body of work.
