Celebrant Trainer’s Diary: What type of ceremonialist are you?

Two things that may come up during your celebrant life are the questions of:

What type of ceremonialist am I?
Do I have a speciality area?

Matrimonial hand washing ritual

Over the course of more than thirty years as a Heart-led Celebrant (just call me the OG!), I’ve had the privilege of officiating across a wide variety of rites of passage, so I’m particularly well versed in being able to hold the space for those who study our Diploma in Advanced Ceremony and Ritual. From Fertility-blessing Ceremonies to Amputation-bereavement Ceremonies to Broom Jumping Ceremonies to House Blessing Ceremonies to New-author Blessing Ceremonies to Forgiveness Ceremonies to Friendship Ceremonies to Cord-cutting Ceremonies, and so many more, I have the lived experience of creating bespoke rituals and ceremonies no matter what transition a human is going through.

When I reflect on the above two questions, my answers look like this:

Type of Ceremonialist
Intuitive, instinctive, adaptive, responsive, curious and creative.

Specialism
Although my favourite ceremonies are based outdoors in unspoilt nature, and anything nature-related or infused with spirituality, my specialism is: DEPTH.

Yes, I’m an all-rounder and can tilt from traditional to alternative, spiritual to humanist, indoors to outdoors, with ease, grace and purpose, what I love most is creating ceremonies that aren’t rushed (20 minutes in a factory-farm style crematorium isn’t where my joy is found), and that allow my client/s to dwell in the liminal space of change and transformation.

My specialism in depth is born from energy awareness, curiosity and authenticity. I am 100% there in any ceremony no matter the occasion. Although I don’t tend to suffer from nerves or anxiety, I do carry a heightened awareness into each ceremony, acutely aware of everything going on in and around me. (Think ‘twenty tabs open all at once on your laptop’ but you can see each one at the same time!)
