The Art of Holding Space: Why Authentic Celebrancy Cannot Be Fast-Tracked
In our modern world, we are often encouraged to sprint through life. We want fast food, overnight deliveries, and instant success. This rushed mentality has seeped into the sacred world of ceremonies. As a celebrant who has spent over three decades walking alongside families through life’s thresholds, I am deeply concerned by the rise of commercialised, fast-track training packages. True celebrancy is not a corporate tick-box exercise. There are times I feel almost embarrassed to be part of such an ‘industry’. To me, celebrancy is a soulful calling that requires deep listening, emotional literacy, and fine craft. If we can’t treat our clients with the same care, tolerance, understanding, and respect that we would for a loved one, then why are we in this job?
The Illusion of Instant Qualification
Every week, I see marketing advertisements promising to turn eager individuals into fully certified celebrants over a single weekend. Sure, it is a seductive promise, but it is fundamentally flawed. A two-day or even a five-day course might teach you where to stand, how to hold a folder, and the basic templates for a wedding or a funeral. What it cannot teach you is how to sit in a room with a grieving family and pull the golden threads of a life story from their sorrow. It cannot give you the psychological grounding needed to support a traumatised person, nor the voice quality required to command a ceremony on an outdoor hillside in the pouring rain. (Something I’ve had to do many times over the years!)
When we rush training, we do a disservice to the very people who trust us with their milestone moments. That type of corporate training leaves new celebrants certified but terrified, standing at a lectern with a generic script and a heart full of panic.

To learn the art of celebrancy is akin to an apprenticeship; it requires slow immersion, a dedicated practice, and a willingness to explore the deeper elements of ceremony.

You are helping people step from who they were into who they are becoming.
